CDs and DVDs were believed to have very long shelf lives, perhaps up to 100 years. For some product, this has proved false. Failed adhesives and unstable substrates may cause...
...damage like what can be seen in this image, which can make reading the media impossible.
It is recommended that branded products be bought. While there is no guarantee, it is believed that the branded products may have more rigorous testing during manufacture.
Also, the types with the printing on top help to clearly indicate which side of the media is meant for burning - the blank side, placed down in the CD or DVD burner.
