Nortel Golden Legends Club...

Historical note: several years ago, two courses were offered by PCN for retirees of Nortel, members of the Nortel Golden Legends Club.

A description of both appears below...

Preliminary Computer Course

Four classes, approximately four hours long each, held on sequential Wednesdays at the Nortel Golden Legends Club, Dixie Road, Brampton. Classes start promptly at 9 AM.

This course is intended for individuals who do not presently own a modern personal computer, but are considering buying one. Classes will be divided up into periods of discussion and actual PC use. Attendees will learn what a computer can be used for, and what to look for when buying a PC.

Objectives...

Costs : none.

Materials : provided.

Course Description and Schedule...

Day One - Discussion, with hands-on experience...

Attendees will hear about, and discuss, what a computer can be used for. Attendees will learn to identify the components of a PC, and go through the process of starting up and shutting down a PC.

Attendees will receive a printout of a document which identifies all of the components of a computer, what they are used for, what differences they have, what to look for, and how to finance a purchase.

These computer terms will be introduced verbally...

Attendees will receive a one page printout from each of the different program types, to help with their comprehension of these computer tools.

These common computer components will be introduced. Attendees will have an opportunity to look inside a PC also.

Attendees will be shown how to startup and shutdown a PC. Elements of the Windows "desktop" will be identified and explained.

Attendees will receive a picture of a PC with all the different elements labeled and identified, and a screen-print of the generic Windows desktop, with its elements labelled and identified.

Days Two and Three - Running programs on a PC...

Over the course of two "play" days, attendees will have the opportunity to use principally these three programs to gain some proficiency in operating a PC.

Attendees will receive a printout of brief instructions for running these three programs, for use at the Club or elsewhere.

Day Four – The Internet, Email, and buying a PC...

Attendees will be introduced to the Internet and will have an opportunity to discuss email.

Attendees will be asked to determine what their computing needs are. Attendees will be invited to present details about computers they are considering for purchase, for discussion and comment.

Attendees will be guided through the purchase of a theoretical PC that would suit their needs. A worksheet will be provided for making notes and calculations.

Used computers will be compared to new computers, with the discussion including initial costs, as well as the costs of maintenance and upgrades. The costs of Internet access and software will also be discussed.

A presentation would be made of a PC available from PCN, with pricing expressly for the Nortel Golden Legends club members.

Conclusion...

Should an attendee complete this four-day course and acquire a PC (from anywhere) that will be available for their full-time home use, the attendee will be eligible to take the ten-day Introductory Computer Course - as presented by PCN in a similar time slot on Fridays at the Club.
