Games, novelties...

Here are links to some decent little games and that you can download and play, or, in some cases, just play from this site. All are small-sized, and have recently been tested for Windows XP.

Some of the games date back to the 1980's, so there may be quirks to deal with to get them to play on your PC. Some may require unpacking, so steer the zipped files into a location of your choice, and create startup icons as needed. My site upload speed is only 800K and there are numerous graphics on this web page, so getting the page graphics to load and getting some of these files to download may take a bit of patience. Generally speaking, each is worth the effort involved to set up and play.

Blocks.exe

Size : 48 KB

Function : a small logic game

Here is a doc with instructions on how to play.

Yahtzee

This shareware game installs well and plays well. No known risks. ©2004 James Garton.

For Yahtzee scorepads for off-computer play, try printing out these six-game scoresheets as you need them.

Hangman

This Windows version of the classic hangman game came with some past version of a Symantec product. Other games in the Symantec pack are also included here...

Jacks Dots Memory Match Pick-up-sticks Mastermind

Golf

This shockwave game is embedded in the Nabisco World site, so there are a few commercials, otherwise it plays very well. It takes several minutes for even a seasoned game-player to figure out how to play, so don't give up on it too early.

Miniputt

Miniputt is a Shockwave game, a simple, animated graphic arcade game that resembles a miniputt golf course. This game requires the Shockwave player or Shockwave browser plug-in to run. Shockwave is a common plug-in, and Shockwave animations are often found in the content of websites of all kinds, so chances are Shockwave is already installed on your PC.

Visit shockwave.com to see all their other games available, and to learn more about Shockwave products.

Scrabble

This older version of Scrabble still plays well enough to be challenging and entertain. Download the file, run it to unpack the contents and create the needed folders (C:\games\scrabble).

Seek out newer versions to get many more features and updated dictionaries.

Snowball.exe

Size : 2.0 MB

Function : a small action game (originally an email greeting card for a corporation)

How to use it : Move your team members around to position them for throwing and to avoid being hit. Hold the mouse button down to increase the power of your throws, then release button to actually throw.

(Who Wants To Be A) Millionaire

This is a link to the online version of the ABC television game.

Windows Arcade

This .exe file will unpack the components of five simple arcade-style games - Asteroid, Battle Zone, Centipede, Missile Command, and Tempest. Of these, Centipede and Tempest are still very good games, while the other three may be remembered by game-players in the 80's.

These games came with an extended version of Windows 98, if memory serves.

China Sea

This is a text-based trading game that, once learned, can be quite addictive. Players buy and sell four different products at seven ports to increase their cash, product stock, ship size and number of ship guns. Pirates and bad weather can cause loss, and may eventually wipe you out before you return to get your products into the warehouse and save the game.

Newer Windows versions of this game are available. Look for "Tradewinds", a Shockwave game. The essence of the game is the same as the DOS version above (which dates back about 15 years).

Street Shuffle

Rune this self-extracting EXE to unzip the contents of the file. The programming will suggest a directory - take note. Afterwards, double-click the STREET.EXE file in the created directory to run the program.

To play, move the tiles with the appropriate roadway on them in the path of the taxi, so it can keep driving. The shorter the path, the more gas and money you save. Use he money to buy needed supplies, and build your business equity.

Novelties...

Here are some links to some novelties, jokes, and humour...

Felix.exe

Size : 300 KB

Function : screen buddy

Pong

Pong is often considered to be the very first video game, dating back to the early 1970's, but there were predecessors. To learn more, visit this site. This is humourous take on the game, not the actual game itself.

Stress.exe

Size : 1.2 MB

Function : This "interactive screen saver" lets you ease stress (visually) on your computer without permanent damage.

Bored

This is an interactive cartoon from BitMagic about an untypical office meeting. To see other works, try this site by Joe Corrao.

Blender

Another interactive cartoon, this one from from joecartoon.com. Requires Shockwave. Visit shockwave.com to see all their other games available, and to learn more about Shockwave products.

Nut Chords

This program can be used to learn chords for a guitar. Once the controls are mastered, a chord can be quickly set up and audibly played in a very life-like guitar sound (hit Enter) for comparison to the sound of a real instrument. Shift and Ctrl will toggle a chord back and forth from the keyboard depiction to the fretboard depiction so the program can actually be helpfl for piano also.

Unpack the self-extracting ZIP file into a folder of your choice. Double-click on nc.exe to begin.
